Will Open Access unleash the beast?

I hadn't seen The Mummy since 1999 when I got hold of a pirated copy of it in Colombo, Sri Lanka. However, when HBO aired both The Mummy and the sequel last evening, I couldn't resist but to watch both the movies till early morning. Those of you who have seen the movie would know that the whole thing starts with the reading of a book which awakens the beast etc. etc. Then reading from another book kills it. Okey... so what's the relation between The Mummy and Open Access??

If you consider Egypt, there are many writings openly accessible (at least for those of you who have the skill set to read Hieroglyphs off of a stone tablet). However, there are also "sacred" writings on magic, science, politics, warfare, medicine etc. which have (had) extremely restricted access. If you've seen The Mummy then you would know that the books needed a special key to allow access before anyone could read from them. Seeing how reading one sentence could awaken a terrible beasty who goes on plaguing the earth, it doesn't seem like such a bad idea to restrict the access to these materials.

Now fast forward a few thousand years.... Are we saying that opening up material such as government documents, military manuals, scientific discoveries and medical procedures is the way to go? Although it sounds like the humanitarian thing to do, thinking about it a bit more, these modern documents resemble the Book of the Dead and the Book of Amun-ra of the Egyptian times.

So the question is....

Will Open Access unleash the beast?   

I guess we will find out eventually...
